Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
