New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
