Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
